In September of 2004, the WCRI initiated its Phones for Fundraising program. Our cell phone fundraiser program is sponsored by Shelter Alliance (www.shelteralliance.net), a program of cell phone recycling company GRC Wireless Recycling (www.grcrecycling.com). Through Shelter Alliance, nonprofit organizations raise funds through the collection & recycling of used cell phones, and businesses & consumers donate & recycle cell phones to benefit nonprofit participants.

Did you know your old cell phone could be worth
up to $30!?

Here's How It Works:
We collect used/unwanted cell phones from the community and send them to Shelter Alliance. Shelter Alliance, through their parent company GRC Wireless Recycling, refurbishes or recycles the phones and then sends the WCRI a check for the value of the phones.

Become a GOOD CORPORATE NEIGHBOR or COMMUNITY COLLECTION SPOT
Because we are a safe house, we find it difficult to collect phones from individuals in the community without giving away our location. Thus, we are constantly looking for locations in Providence with parking and/or are easy to access for our donors to drop in and donate their used cell phones.

We also enlist local organizations to hold Good Corporate Neighbor Cell Phone Drives within their offices. These cell phone drives have helped us raise more than $5,000 in general operating funds in just over 18 months!

Are you a student who needs community service hours as a graduation requirement or who just wants to give back to the community? Shelter Alliance has set up a Community Service Program that rewards students 1 hour of community service for every 5 cell phones collected on our behalf. Click here to see how you can get involved! Be sure to let Shelter Alliance know that you would like to collect cell phones on behalf of the Women's Center of Rhode Island!

Currently, we have community collection boxes located at:

- Reflections Cafe at 8 Governor Street, located at the corner of Governor & Wickenden Street in the Fox Point area of Providence
(Monday - Saturday: 7:00 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday: 8:00 a.m. to 11 p.m.)

- Blockbuster Video at 141 Pitman Street, located in the Eastside Marketplace plaza on the East Side of Providence
(Monday - Sunday: 10:00 a.m. to Midnight)

We collect any and all cell phones of any age, make or model and in any condition. Please leave the phones only as we do not collect chargers, belt clips, or hands-free devices. Those items are not recycleable and will end up being thrown away.

We are looking for additional locations for our community collection boxes, as well as some Good Corporate Neighbors to hold cell phone drives in house. If you would like to hold a cell phone drive at your office, or collect phones from the community on our behalf, please contact at 401-861-2761.
