Why Escape?

We are rejoicing in the outpouring of volunteer support this Spring! 

After enduring a particularly harsh winter which took its toll on the exterior and interior of our house, we are grateful to the volunteer groups and organizations that have donated their time, resources and talents to sprucing up our house and grounds.

As in many homes, our kitchen and dining room is the hub of activity for the over 240 women and families we offer safety and shelter to each year.  We are thankful to Swarovski for organizing a team of 17 employees to transforming our dining room and living area by cleaning, painting and refinishing woodwork.  This amazing team also got new flooring donated and installed!  With the help of Swarovski employee donations and an Ocean State Charities grant, we were able to put the finishing touches on the dining room with the purchase of new furniture. 

To create a welcoming exterior, the Lincoln School 8th graders dedicated their Day of Service to planting and landscaping our gardens, patio and play area.  On May 28, this volunteer group of 26 girls and 5 faculty/staff members from the Lincoln School, spent the day gardening and spring cleaning. The girls were enthusiastic about their time at WCRI and many of them expressed interest in volunteering on an individual basis. 

Each and every one of our volunteers help us to provide hope, healing and comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence.  You can make a difference, too!  Find out the many ways you can lend a helping hand!

Who Turned to Us for Safety in 2014!

Dear Friends,

While every new year offers new hope, new opportunities and new beginnings, 2015 shows great promise of being an extraordinary year as we reflect upon the accomplishments of 2014, and continue to serve our community by providing hope, healing and comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence in their journey to becoming survivors.

Our 40 year legacy was built by caring friends like you who continue to support our mission, which strengthens our ability to help our clients renew their strength and rebuild their lives.

We are truly grateful for your generous support that helped us extend a reassuring hand and provide safety, shelter, hope and vital services for the many women and children who found the courage to walk through our door to safety in 2014.

I would like to share some of the 2014 highlights that you helped make possible.

We were able to open our door to 245 women and children in need of safety, emergency shelter, food, basic needs and social services. Our residential program and professional staff provided vital services to ensure their safety and help them rebuild their lives. Your generous support strengthened our ability to provide 6,422 emergency shelter nights, nearly 11,000 meals and other essential services.

Nearly 2,200 individuals called our 24-hour, 7-day helpline seeking information,supportive listening, crisis intervention, advocacy and safety planning provided by our dedicated staff and trained volunteers. Thanks to your response to our call for help, we were here to answer their call for help!

Through our collaborative partnerships with local school districts and community agencies, we reached hundreds of youth and adults this past year, and provided them with the information and tools needed to recognize and avoid harmful behaviors associated with unhealthy relationships, identify healthy relationships and develop effective communication and conflict resolution skills. Together, we have made a positive impact, and our programs and partnerships continue to grow.

Our Volunteer Coordinator recruited and trained new volunteers to provide support services at our emergency shelter, as well as coordinating day-of-service volunteer teams to help out with special projects. Their generous gifts of time, talent and treasure made a difference!

Our signature events were very successful fundraisers and friend raisers in 2014. The 12th Annual Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon in May and the 3rd Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence in October experienced their biggest years ever!

And, we celebrated 40 years of service to our community with a special birthday celebration at Flemings Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar on December 1st.

Without a doubt, 2014 was a "year of special milestones and accomplishments" for the Women's Center. And, all of it was made possible by caring donors, volunteers, staff, community partners, dedicated Board members and supporters who either stepped out to attend or sponsor a special event, provided a grant to support our programs and services, volunteered, joined our Board, became a community partner, made in-kind donations, responded generously to our appeals or renewed their commitment to our organization with their generous support.

Once again, thank you for your continued support and generosity. You have strengthened our ability to extend a reassuring hand to help our clients as they renew their strength and rebuild their lives, as well as providing new hope, new opportunities and new beginnings in 2015!

Young Rhode Islanders Show They Know More and Do More by Taking A Stand for Healthy Relationships!

February is a time to celebrate the important people and relationships in our lives. It is also an ideal time to raise an awareness of the importance of healthy relationships by promoting Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

As an essential part of our mission, we're committed to educating the community about domestic violence. Through our collaborative partnerships with local school districts, community partners and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, we reach hundreds of young people each year and provide them with valuable tools to help them develop healthy relationships and avoid unhealthy relationships.

During February, our Community Education and Prevention Coordinator Jasmine Torres and Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator Meg Joyce provided four informational sessions for Classical High school students. Each session included valuable resource materials and engaged students in a dialogue about preventing teen dating violence and unhealthy relationships.

In collaboration with the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, we also encouraged students and community partners to Wear Orange 4 Love on Tuesday, February 10th and to participate in the Vine Contest.

Wear Orange 4 Love encouraged Rhode Islanders to join their peers all over the world by standing up for healthy relationships & taking a stand against dating violence. Participants helped spread the word about #orange4love by sharing their orange photos online.

The Vine Contest, hosted by RICADV, invited young people, ages 12 - 24 to submit a vine or video about what it means to be there for a friend in an unhealthy relationship. Entries were submitted by March 1st. The winning entry will be awarded $500. For more information, visit RICADV Teen Center.

The Women's Center of Rhode Island is pleased to be part of this important statewide project. Our collaborative partnerships strengthen our ability to have a positive impact in educating the community about domestic violence.

Community College of Rhode Island Volunteer Service Team Made a Difference at the Women's Center.

 

Committed to making a difference by responding to community needs, a group of faculty, staff and students from the Community College of Rhode Island volunteered for a day of service at the Women's Center as part of CCRI's Annual Community Service Day.

This dedicated volunteer team worked diligently to organize and clean our childcare room, and they rolled up their sleeves to scrub our dining room, kitchen and pantry from top to bottom. Everything they touched sparkled when they finished their work.

Following a morning of cleaning, they gathered together with our residents and staff for a pot luck luncheon and provided valuable information about CCRI's programs and resources that would help our residents continue their education.

This resourceful presentation provided hope for our residents by helping them realize that accessible and affordable educational opportunities are available for them to explore and utilize.

Community College of Rhode Island President Ray DiPasquale and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Greg Lamontagne stopped by to meet the volunteers and WCRI staff. They shared their passion for the Women's Center's work and expressed an interest in fostering a relationship between the Community College of Rhode Island and the Women's Center.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Community College of Rhode Island for their volunteer spirit, hard work, enthusiasm and passion for making a difference in the lives of the individuals and families we serve.

We look forward to working with them on future projects.

13th Annual Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon

Our Annual Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon was held on Friday, May 1st in the Grand Ballroom of the Providence Marriott Downtown Hotel.

This signature fundraising event provides the Women’s Center of Rhode Island with an opportunity to honor exceptional women who have overcome adversity, achieved success and/or unselfishly opened doors for other women.

All proceeds from the luncheon directly fund the life saving programs and services provided by the Women's Center of Rhode Island. 

 

 



Thank You for Making Our 40th Birthday Celebration Memorable!

In celebration of our 40th Birthday, the Women’s Center of Rhode Island hosted a birthday party with special friends at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar on Monday, December 1st.

Approximately 75 guests joined us to celebrate 40 years of service to the community by providing hope, healing and comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence in their journey to becoming survivors.

While guests enjoyed the festivities, they also had an opportunity to learn more about our organization, our mission and our services from a special video presentation, along with testimonials delivered by survivors.

With a birthday cake and candles symbolizing each year of service, we sang Happy Birthday together, and thanked all our supporters for helping us bring light, hope and healing into the lives of domestic violence survivors.

Together, we will continue to make a difference and light the way to safety, independence and a brighter future for the individuals and families we serve.
